A cat that pees on your bed instead of in the litter box is every cat owner’s nightmare. In this article, I will talk about 3 simple things that you can do today that can potentially end this problem tomorrow.

Number one on your priority list should be bringing your cat in to the vet. A cat with a medical condition is a serious issue and time is of the essence.

Bring your cat in and ask for a complete physical and tell your vet that he has been peeing on the bed. Your vet will likely order a urinalysis to determine if your cat has a urinary tract infection as this is a common cause of inappropriate urination. Any medical issues need to be dealt with before moving on to determine if the problem is a behavioral one.

Your next course of action should be to get rid of any material that the cat has peed on. In the case of a cat that has been peeing on the bed, your bedding needs to go. This may seem drastic but it is the most effective way to make sure that any chemical attraction is eliminated.

If it’s something harder to completely get rid of like your carpet, try using a cleaner like Nature’s Miracle or getting the area steam cleaned.

Even if you think the smell is gone, if there is even the smallest trace remaining, your cat will smell it and it will be much harder to stop him from peeing in that spot again.

The third factor that you need to be aware of is stress. If you have multiple cats in your house, it’s important that they each have their own space. They should also have their own litter box. This can be hard to accommodate when you have several cats but it is something you should strongly consider making work. Ideally, you should have one more litter box than you have cats.

Now that you understand the importance of ruling out medical problems, cleaning any urine-soaked areas or materials and eliminating unnecessary stress from your cat’s life, you’ll be well on the way to stopping your cat peeing outside the litter box.

It took many months and many dollars for my wife and I to learn these valuable lessons. We have a cat that cost us a lot of money and nerves peeing all over our apartment. We were desperate to find a solution so decided to take matters into our own hands.

We did a lot of reading about how to stop the cat urinating on our carpet on the Internet and weren’t entirely satisfied with what we found.

We spent the next several months compiling all the most relevant information and also interviewing veterinarians in our area and around the world.

The results of our research can now be found here at StopCatPeeing.com where we have many articles relating to inappropriate urination in cats.

A cat that pees outside the litter box is a frustrating problem and one that could prove fatal to your cat if you don’t know what to do. Do your homework and help your cat before it’s too late.

The Complete Cat Health Care Guide really is a complete compendium on cat care – and not just on the health of your cat, either. This useful owner’s manual covers all aspects of cat ownership in real detail, from the more frivolous aspects (ten reasons why cats make fantastic pets, how to play with your cat, etc) to the absolutely essential (healthcare, nutrition, first aid, and so on).

Why Does Anyone Need a Book on Cats?

Cats take care of themselves, right? You can buy a cat and not really need to research how to look after it, how to care for it, and what healthcare problems and potential behavioral issues you’ll need to look out for, right?

The answer (as all cat-lovers will already know) is, of course, definitely not!

Cat ownership implies a certain level of basic, non-negotiable responsibility. If you really want the best relationship that it’s possible to have with your cat, it’s worthwhile taking the time to find out what makes her tick. This means finding out how to keep her happy and healthy, how to supply her with adequate care and nutrition, how to help her adapt to your house (the house training secrets are a definite bonus!), how to prevent and deal with any behavioral problems that might eventuate, and in general how to achieve and maintain the kind of rewarding and mutually affectionate relationship with your cat that we’d all like to have.

The Contents: A More Detailed Look

Happily, this handy guide supplies you with all the information listed above – but it doesn’t stop there. The book takes a pleasantly proactive approach to the question of cat ownership: not only are practical how-to’s supplied, but the team at Kingdom of Pets have anticipated any and all of the problems you might have with your cat – and have listed all the trouble-shooting advice you’ll ever need to keep your relationship with your cat on an even keel.

The book’s laid out pretty logically: essentially, the first half of the book is dedicated to cat-care basics and the more ‘frivolous’ aspects of ownership (choosing your cat, things to avoid in a potential kitten/cat, detailed breed information, the homecoming, playtime suggestions, necessary and recommended supplies and toys, etc); the latter half of the book is where you should look for the nitty-gritty essentials (essential nutrition information, welcome and unwelcome cat behavior explained, how to deal with feline behavioral problems, basic first aid, common illnesses, healthcare options, and caring for the senior cat.)

Information I Found Particularly Useful

Everyone knows the basics of cat ownership: try to get yourself a healthy cat, make sure you’ve got a litter box, feed it regularly, etc etc. But it’s the details that seem to elude us – or me, certainly. How much are you meant to feed it? How are you actually meant to house train a cat? How should you react when your cat presents you with a gruesome, bloodied bird carcass? Why do cats destroy your furniture (and not the expensive carpet-post you bought) – and, more importantly, how can you stop them from doing this? How do you deal with aggression? How are you even meant to know which breed and individual cat is going to suit you the best?

The Complete Cat Health Care Guide has the answers to all these questions, and deals with the issues most pertinent to cat owners in a conversational yet informative style that’s very user-friendly. There’s no confusing terminology, no unclear or contradictory tips – nothing but relevant, helpful information, practical recommendations, and hands-on advice. It really is all covered!

The Best Parts

It’s pretty reassuring, from a consumer’s point of view, to be offered a no-questions-asked, money-back guarantee. Upon downloading this book, you get 60 whole days to read and trial the cat care information and strategies included in the volume – and if you’re not completely satisfied, a guaranteed full refund is available. It’s a refreshing show of confidence from the authors, and goes a long way towards assuaging any possible doubts that prospective buyers might have.

I’d definitely recommend this guide to anyone who’s even considering buying a cat: the information contained within is absolutely indispensable, and will go a long way towards guaranteeing a happy, healthy relationship with your pet.

If you want to avoid having to spend hundreds of dollars on new bedding and carpeting due to your cat peeing outside the litter box, this article might just contain the answers you’re looking for.

I will discuss how medical issues, chemical attraction and psychological stress are the 3 most common factors in cases of inappropriate urination in cats. By learning about these 3 factors, you’ll be able to take steps to re-training your cat to use the litter box before any more damage is done.

The very first thing that you absolutely MUST do is bring your cat in to see your veterinarian. A cat that is having medical issues such as a urinary tract infection or kidney disease is most likely to try to send you a message by peeing on your bed or carpet.

Bring your cat in and ask for a full examination and be sure to tell your vet about your cat’s inappropriate urination. It’s only when you can get medical problems treated that you can move on to try to solve behavioral issues that your cat may be having.

Your next course of action should be getting rid of any bedding or carpeting that your cat has peed on. The smell of urine is a strong attraction to your cat to re-offend in the same areas. Even if you think you’ve eliminated all traces of cat pee, your cat can still likely smell it.

If it’s not possible to completely get rid of the urine-soaked material, you can try steam cleaning the area or using a commercial product like Nature’s Miracle to eradicate the smell AND the organic compounds left behind by the urine itself.

The third factor that you need to address is stress. If your cat is stressed in any way, beyond meowing at you – they’re likely to send a message with their bladder.

If you have more than one cat, make absolutely sure to have AT LEAST one litter box per cat and ideally one more than you have cats. They need their own space and being forced together is a sure recipe for inappropriate urination.

//-->

Taking the 3 elements into account when trying to stop your cat peeing on your bed will go a long way towards getting to the bottom of the problem. My wife and I learned our lesson the hard way with our cat who peed so often in one spot on our carpet that it ended up damaging the neighbor’s ceiling below us. Needless to say, it cost us an absolute fortune so we knew that we needed to take action.

We did a lot of reading about how to stop the cat urinating on the carpet on the Internet and weren’t entirely satisfied with what we found.

If you’re trying to stop your cat peeing everywhere, this article will show you how to save yourself a lot of trouble and even a lot of money. I will introduce you to 3 major factors that can cause cats to abandon their litter box and how you can put a stop to it sometimes as fast as overnight.

Location, location, location. I’m not talking about where your cat has some real estate. I’m talking about where you’ve decided is the best place for your cat’s litter box. You have to consider things like foot traffic and general commotion around the area that your cat goes to pee.

Your cat doesn’t have the luxury of going into the bathroom and closing the door so it’s up to you to provide a place where he can have some privacy and not get bothered by the dog or your other cats. It’s also important to keep the litter box away from your cat’s food. You wouldn’t want to eat in the bathroom and neither would your cat.

While we’re on the subject of the litter box, another important factor is the kind of litter you are using. Some cats get quite picky about their substrate preference and will decide that they no longer like the feel of clumping litter. Try out different brands and try to avoid using scented litters.

The third major factor that you need to address to stop your cat peeing everywhere is stress. Your cat is much more susceptible to changes in their environment that you or I so you need to keep a close eye on her. Moving house or the introduction of new pets are 2 very common reasons why a cat will protest with their bladder.

Now that you understand the importance of litter box placement, substrate preference and stress avoidance, you can start to solve the issue of your cat’s inappropriate urination. My wife and I had to learn these lessons the hard way when our cat peed so much in one spot of our apartment that it leaked through and did several thousand dollars of damage to our neighbour’s ceiling.

The smell is unmistakable. Sometimes it can be so strong it can make your eyes water. It’s enough to drive anyone crazy and to go to any length to research cat odor removal.

I have extensive experience with cleaning cat urine from carpets, bedspreads, clothing… you name it. I have had many cats over the years and a few of them were notorious for being “sneaky leakers”.

I won’t get into the causes for inappropriate urination in this article as you can find plenty of information about that elsewhere on StopCatPeeing.com.

However, if your cat is peeing outside the litter box, please get him to the vet ASAP. It is of vital importance as if your cat has a urinary tract infection, time is of the essence.

Ok, so how do we go about cat odor removal?

I’m a bit frugal myself, I must admit so I use a bit of a homemade recipe that consists of the following:

1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide

A teaspoon of dish soap

1/4 cup baking soda

I recommend mixing these ingredients together (carefully) and putting in a plastic spray bottle.

You can then douse the urine soaked area and let it completely dry. You want to be sure to test the area first for color fastness as I’m sure you’re aware of what effect hydrogen peroxide can have on fabrics.

Another tip that I find helps is to use a blacklight.

This will help show you where the urine is so you can do a better job of completely soaking the area. Try putting some painter’s tape around the area so that when you turn the lights back on, you can easily see where to clean.

Cat urinating problems are more common than you think.

One of the most important things to know about a cat that has urinating problems is that they are quite likely trying to communicate something to you.

What do I mean by this?

Well, cats are extremely clean animals. Given the choice, they will always use a clean area like a litter box to eliminate. It when things aren’t to their liking or outside stresses are playing a factor that your cat will abandon his litterbox and instead pick another spot.

It’s important to note that a cat that pees outside the litterbox is not misbehaving. Under no circumstances should you discipline a cat for inappropriate urination practices.

Here is a short list of things to check for to help in solving cat urinating problems.

1. Is the litterbox clean?

This is a somewhat obvious question but one that is often overlooked. Be honest with yourself. Are you cleaning the litter box both often enough and thoroughly enough?

2. Where is the litter box?

Litter box aversion can often be due to the location of the box itself. Is it in a high-traffic area? Is it hidden away in a closet?

On the one hand, you want your cat to have some privacy so putting it out in the living room isn’t a great idea! But on the other hand, you also don’t want to stick it in the closet where it will get forgotten about and not cleaned often enough.

Solving cat urinating problems starts with doing some thorough research on the subject and getting to the bottom of why your cat is peeing outside the litter box.

Be sure to get your cat to the vet as a first step as a urinary tract infection is a very distinct possibility and the number one reason cat’s urinate where they shouldn’t.

Even after you’ve figured out why your cat is peeing outside the litter box, you’re still stuck with the challenge of removing cat urine smell.

A mistake many people make is to just attack the source of the smell with whatever household cleaner they can find.

This is a mistake.

Due to the organic compounds in cat urine, some cleaners can actually make the smell worse. I think we can all agree that we don’t want that!

You have a couple of options available to you for removing cat urine smell.

Brand name “pet odor removal” products

Homemade mixtures for cat urine removal

First let’s talk about the brand name products.

The most famous brand out there and perhaps the best is one called Nature’s Miracle. This is what is referred to as an enzymatic cleaner. It basically works to break down the organic compounds in the urine and to completely eradicate the smell.

This is important not only for us humans but also for the cat. If they can even smell a whiff of their urine, they are quite likely to return to the spot and pee.

There are many other brands out there but some of the top-rated are Bramton Simple Solution, OdorXit and Petrotech Odor Eliminator.

With regards to homemade solutions, try the homemade recipe here at StopCatPeeing.com as it has proven to be quite effective according to many of our readers.

In a lot of cases, when a cat stops using the litterbox to urinate, owners often think the cat is spraying. Although this can often be the case, it is certainly not the rule.

There is a key difference between a cat that is spraying and one that is urine marking.

A spraying cat will invariably mark on vertical surfaces. Your wall, the leg of the sofa or the side of the bookcase.

A urine marking cat will typically target a horizontal surface like your bed or just on the carpet.

All cats are quite capable of marking. It doesn’t matter if they are spayed or neutered. Although intact male cats are the most likely to mark, it is not unheard of for an intact or spayed female to do the same.

So why do cats spray in the first place?

To leave what’s called a pheromonal message for other cats to smell. Think of it as a calling card that says “I was here. Now you know.” The only problem is, you don’t need to know that your cat was there!

If you suspect your cat is urine-marking, book a visit to the vet immediately to rule out any medical issues.

Although marking itself is a behavioral pattern, sometimes it can be mistaken and actually be a pre-cursor to a cat with a urinary tract infection and this must be dealt with immediately.

A cat with a urinary tract infection (UTI) is a very serious issue. When a cat is suffering from a UTI, they will very often avoid their litter box and either urinate or spray around your house.

The reason your cat does this is that he is associating the pain he’s feeling when urinating with litter box. Your cat will often avoid peeing until she can no longer hold it and have to go wherever she is when it’s “too late”.

You may even see a bit of blood in your cat’s urine.

It’s time to see the vet.

Your vet will prescribe a course of antibiotics for your cat and perhaps some pain medication.

It is now of vital of importance to address your cat’s diet.

Ask your vet about special urinary foods that are available for your cat. These are specially formulated to avoid crystal buildup in your cat’s urethra to prevent possible flare-ups in the future.

You must also have plenty of water sources available for your cat. Unfortunately, many cats simply don’t drink enough water and this can lead to urinary tract infections.

Either place glasses of water around your home or try a special “cat water fountain” as cat’s are drawn to the movement of the water and are more likely to drink.

Urinary tract infections in cats are potentially a life-threatening situation. You need to catch them early and then be diligent about preventing them in the future.

The very first thing you must do if your cat is urinating on your carpet is get him or her to the vet.

It is of vital importance that you do this. It is quite common for cats to get what is called a urinary tract infection (UTI) and if it is not caught and treated in time, it can very quickly lead to death.

Why do cats get UTIs so easily?

The answer is two-fold.

Firstly, cats are notorious for not drinking enough water.

Secondly, the high-ash content of most supermarket brand cat foods contribute to crystal buildup in the cat’s urethra.

The combination of the two very often lead to a urinary tract infection.

In order to stop a cat urinating on carpet, you first need to get a vet to give your cat a clean bill of health. Then we’re down to dealing with a behavioral issue.

There are as many reasons for a cat peeing inappropriately as there are breeds of cats so you need to do a little detective work to determine why your little feline friend has decided to abandon his litterbox.

Once a behavioral pattern has been determined, you also need to talk to your vet about a special prescribed diet for cats with a history of urinary tract issues.

The most important thing to know is that inappropriate urination in cats can be solved. Too many cats are given to shelters or put down every year because their owners don’t know what to do.

Luckily, you’ve found this site and are on the right path to stopping your cat urinating where he shouldn’t.
